See Your Business as a Long Haul Project
Too often those who have decided to go into business for themselves have been blinded by their dreams of getting out of the rat race and making their own future. They have had big dreams of starting a business that will be the next big thing and about being able to fire the boss. Too often these dreams become nothing but shattered images and the new business person and even some who have been struggling along for years are left with nothing but a nightmare of debt and losing all that they own.
In my experience of dealing with many businesses and business people over the years one of the most common mistakes that entrepreneurs make is trying to get too far too fast, they do not realize that running a business is something that is for a long period of time. The business in most cases is not able to provide the large income and free lifestyle that the entrepreneur has dreamed about for many years, and in most cases many years of hard work and struggle.
How can this be avoided? The first thing that the new entrepreneur needs to do is actually prepare for the jump into the business world, plan out what it is that they want to happen and get it down on paper.
each step of the process needs to be mapped out and then broken down into small easily achievable lumps that are taken in turn. Focusing on the goals of the business and where the business is actually headed to is an integral part in getting a business to get going.
The entrepreneur must investigate the market for their particular good or service, they must know what competition and barriers to entry that they are going to face, i have lost count of the many times that i have seen new businesses start up only to find that there is no market or the entry to the market is too expensive for a start up business.
The advent of internet marketing in particular has brought many problems for the budding entrepreneur. Withe the current recession many people have lost their employment and have turned to the internet to try and make a go of running a home based business, they are enticed by flashy websites that offer all types of FANTASTIC opportunities that are for the most part scams.
The advice that i can give to any would be entrepreneur in these cases is old but good “if it seems to good to be true” leave it alone.
Business success is about getting all of the basics right and being prepared to put in the effort over a long period of time, effort and learning. Be prepared and you can see the results of your efforts, only don’t expect to see them tomorrow. You never know when the results will show up, but the the right effort and the right amount of time, they will show up.
